Final Exam

1. What are the negative effects of the internet on education?
a. Negative, Effects, Internet, Education

2. "Negative Effects of Internet"  Education AND students
a. I started by going to the Metasearch tool Dogpile to search for websites without the domain of .com in them. The Sites found were either unrelated to education or, to me, considered outdated. (information pertaining to 1997-2002)
I then tried the search engine Gigablast to see what it would find. The same results were brought up and I was reluctant to go to a site with .com as a domain for this class showed me that domains with .gov or. Edu could provide more direct information. After editing the search statement by including “NOT positive” and Grade schools, the results never changed. I ended up going to Google and clicking on a Link that contained most of must search terms and seemed partially reasonable.

b. "Negative Effects of Internet in Education" StudyMode.com. 09 2012. 09 2012 <http://www.studymode.com/essays/Negative-Effects-Of-Internet-In-Education-1085912.html>.

3. The ASPECT of the site I found is quite low
a.
A - The site is sponsored by itself
S - There are no sources to find
P - The purpose is to allow for Essays to be viewed and used by the public
E - It explains that the internet is useful but also harmful
C - It answers most of my question but not all as it is only a preview of the full essay
T - The essay was made in September of 2012 so
It is quite recent.
b. The Aspect evaluation of my site shows that this is a site that should not be trusted. The Authority is very low as it is sponsored by itself and allows the posting of essays by anyone who has signed up for the site. The site requires you to create an account to view the essay completely so the Sources of information cannot be accessed either. The Purpose of the essay is clearly shown and it shows that the entirety of the essay would work perfectly with my question. The Evenness of the site shows both that the internet helps provide information to students and education but the overall aspect of the Internet greatly diminishes the strength of students learning capabilities. The Coverage of the topic is great as in the short amount of info you can see, the info covers multiple points of views. The Timelines of the info shows that it was posted in September of 2012, which compared to other sites I found, was very recent. With the amount of cons to pros on this site, this would be a horrible place to gain credible information on the topic.

4. The article for this assignment is a great investigation into the use of the Internet and Digital tools in middle and secondary school education. This article provides a great insight into the statistical information of internet and digital education help, but it barely gives any information in how the technology actually helps the students. It gives no details on how it helps student’s abilities to “share ideas with other teachers” or “enabling interaction with students”. If this interaction is through a text or instant message, than the “major impact” isn’t that major as it provides no help to a student’s use of speaking skills or physical interaction with others.
Another problem that I find is that the Article does not give examples as to how or why students of lower incomes faced greater challenges with using the technology compared to other students. If the other students had an increased experience because they already had the technology of phones or computers at home than the data and evidence from this article cannot be trusted as the data is flawed.
The addition of asking the students and teachers how they feel about how technology or digital tools in education will help shape students skills is very nice as it allows for direct information gathering from the study. If the study was based solely on how a student navigated or completed a task through the use of digital tools, than the data would also be flawed or at risk as more tech savvy students would dominate the others.  A personal response to a study or test and how someone actually feels about something can give the best results to any study.

Part 10 web building

This activity shows how every webpage we have searched for or taken information from was made and created through this form of webpage building. The steps needed to supply the internet with a full webpage of information can be time consuming and requires an ample amount of memorization.

Part 9: Finding information on the Open Web

Searching for .gov
Search Engine: Dogpile
Search Strategy: "Positive effects of Music" Emotions AND Character
Citation:
Groß, Wibke, Ulrike Linden, and Thomas Ostermann. "Abstract." National Center for Biotechnology Information. U.S. National Library of Medicine, 21 July 2010. Web. 09 June 2013. <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2921108/>
Evaluation of site:
This site is an amazing source of information that relates to my search as its PURPOSE is almost exactly what i searched for, to show how the effects of music positively helps a persons character. The site also has an extensive COVERAGE of the subject as it explains the procedure and outcome of an experiment based off of musics effects on people.

Searching for .org
Search Engine: Dogpile
Search Strategy: "Positive effects of Music" Emotions AND Character
Citation:
Morris, Jon D., and Mary A. Bonnne. "The Effects of Music on Emotional Response, Brand Attitude, and Purchase Intent in an Emotional Advertising Condition." Association for Consumer Reasearch. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 June 2013. <http://www.acrwebsite.org/search/view-conference-proceedings.aspx?Id=8207>.
Evaluation of site:
This site is also a good place for information on how music can effect humans. It may be considered as a negative effect in some cases, a good report or paper usually has a counter argument inside it so the ENVENESS is also good. The SOURCES of this site are University Professors so the information can be verified as good information.

Searching for .edu
Search Engine: Dogpile
Search Strategy: "Positive effects of Music" Emotions AND Character
Citation:
Nordic Journal of Music Therapy, 10(2) pp. 144-158 http://www.mir.uncc.edu/docs/papers/others/Vink_Annemiek_music_and_emotion.htm
Evaluation of site:
This site has little info for citation and sources as the link referencing the Book the information is taken from is broken. The book that this information is taken from though is a very well known book in the area of Music therapy. so the SOURCES of the book could be considered very good

Searching for .com
Search Engine: Dogpile
Search Strategy: "Positive effects of Music" Emotions AND Character
Citation:
"How Music Affects Us and Promotes Health." Surprising Effects Of Music. Emedexpert.com, n.d. Web. 10 June 2013. <http://www.emedexpert.com/tips/music.shtml>.
Evaluation of site:
This site gives good examples of the effects that Music can do for a humans emotions and whatnot. so the COVERAGE is very good on this site. The SOURCES though are impossible to find making this site also bad.

This Assignment has allowed me to view and understand why looking specifically for certain Top-Level Domains allow for an increased and specific search that easily locates information. The .gov search gave me the most information in this assignment as it brought me to a well cited page with tons of information on the topic i was trying to find. Searching on Dogpile allowed me to make my search so specific that the .gov search only brought up two links and it was the most informative also.

Part 8: Types of Information

Search Engine- Gigablast

Gigablast is a search engine that uses 200 billion full pages and 100,000 servers. It supports the Boolean Operators AND, OR, and NOT. Gigablast also has an advanced search that allows for the exclusion of certain words, URLs, and phrases, but also the inclusion of those too. It allows for Site clustering. It does use stemming as the search i am using is "music AND autistic children positive results" and it brings up at the top of the page links to music therapy, and therapists. Gigablast uses spiders to comb the web for pages but also allows for the direct uploading of a site to their databases.

Metasearch tool- Dogpile

Dogpile is a metasearch tool that compiles all relevant searches to your search from many different search sites such as Google and Yahoo! and "dogpiles" them in a easy to access place. Dogplie has an advanced search bar also with some of the advanced search options that Gigablast offered. (exclusion of certain words, inclusion of specific phrases and words) Dogpile also stems as with the same search "music AND autistic children positive results" it brings up links to children's music searches. Dogpile has a list of past searches on the side of their page for easy access. Dogpile also has a list of the most popular searches on the front of their page.

Subject Directory- World Wide Web Virtual Library

The World Wide Web Virtual Library has quick links to specific areas of life such as Agriculture, Arts, International Affairs, and Law. when i type in my search "music AND autistic children positive results" it shows the number of searches for each part of the search rather the search as a whole. Its advanced features show that Boolean Operators are part of the Directory. It also allows for certain document types, word forms, and output formats. A search directory requires a very specific search on one topic and should be used only if a very advanced search is needed.

Part 7: Periodicals

(worldwide OR international) AND (Media OR Communication OR recreation) AND Internet AND (Helpful OR Progress)

Scholarly Journal
The Computer Revolution and its Impact on Evangelical Mission Research and Strategy." International Bulletin of Missionary Research 33.1 (2009): 33-7. ProQuest. Web. 27 May 2013.

I chose this article because it shows exactly what i am talking about in my search statement. How has the revolution of the internet helped the world and this shows its effects in Religion.

Newspaper

Tedd Appel, Staff W. "The New Networking the Internet is Revolutionizing the Job Market. Sometimes, it's Not Who You Know - it's Where You Look." The Press Democrat: 0. Jul 29 1996. ProQuest. Web. 27 May 2013

I chose this article because it supports my search statement with another view from a different area of the World. Showing how the Internet affect the act of acquiring jobs is a massive effect on life

Summary

This assignment allowed me to explore the use of deep search information searching and allowing me to realize the endless amount of possibilities there are in deep web searches. This also helped me identify the difference between primary and secondary sources. I will definitely try to use deep web searches to look for information for important scholarly papers.

Part 5: Summary

After completing the four parts of this Part 5 assignment i make the assumption tat Books 24X7  would be my go-to Research tool. The ability to refine my search so well would allow me to find the information i wanted fast and easy rather than a very broad search with other search tools. Google book is nice as it allows me to look inside the book and get a nice feel for what the book would be explaining in even more detail.

Part 5: Google Books

Search Terms- Internet and Networks

Citation Info -Intelligent Internet Knowledge Networks: Processing of Concepts and Wisdom (Google eBook) Syed V. Ahamed John Wiley & Sons, Nov 17, 2006

E-Book

Google Books provides a list of Popular Passages which shows that this book has been used by many people before. It provides a look into the actual book itself so i can examine and see that this is actually what i need for my question.

Part 5: Book 24X7

The searching with Books 24X7 was very nice as it provided a multitude of books and search options. The ability to search for a basic topic and then down below edit the search even more with an Author, call number, Publishers and Titles make me consider this as one of the best research sites i've yet to see. If i know of a author who wrote an amazing research book  could look for his name and then the publisher of his works and get a closer search to more of his other research books if they were all done by the same publisher.

I know this is a reliable source as the Authors of the Book have gotten a review which is always a nice sign to see if the book is a good resource. The book also come with a Table of Contents and a Publisher Description

This search differs from the Cannell Library search as it shows multiple Librarys on where to access it it shows who is responsible for the book (the Authors) And it also allows for me to expand and learn more about the Authors.

Part 4: Types of Information

1) Is a vegetarian diet healthier than a meat-based diet?
For Practice Question #1 this is a Statistic related question as you would have to take data from two subjects and compare their lives according to their diets. Reference books,Statistical web sites, scholarly journals, and books would be the best sources as the info from previous questions such as this could be accessed

2) Target often forces musicians to alter lyrics in order to have
their CDs sold in Target stores. Is this censorship?
For Practice Question #2 this is a legal rule that could be located through Websites. The actual law or rule that Target has could be compared to the recorded definition of Censorship

3) How much more can a college graduate expect to earn over
someone with a high school diploma?
For Practice Question #3 this is also a Statistical related question as there has been many studies done on this this type of question so information could be found in multiple places such as Reference books,Statistical web sites, scholarly journals, and books.

4) Should educators use commercial services to combat
plagiarism?
For Practice Question #4 People would be the best place for references as you could as the educators side of the story and how they feel on the question and then you could ask the responses of students the educators teach.

5) Is the current lack of sunspot activity affecting global
warming?
For Practice Question #5 i would say the views of professionals would be required for references. This source can be collected through Official Websites that professional doctors posted. As their extensive knowledge on sunspot activity is the only knowledge that can be trusted.

1. the Internet is Worldwide, how does this attribute help with media, communication, and recreational activities throughout the world?
This Question is a major overview of the web so Academic Encyclopedias would be the best resources for this question as a general explanation of the internet and its benefits to the world would probably be explained.

2. The internet is full of Information, how does this data and knowledge become so convenient for research?
This question is going more in-depth into the idea behind the Internet's sharing capabilities making Academic Journals a good place to reference information on this question as one of these journals could describe the process of uploading and sharing content on the web.

3. Through the whole interconnected system of the internet how does the internet become organized with its endless amounts of links, documents, and pages?
This question is also an In-depth question making Books, E-Books, and Academic Journals great places to search for references. These books could contain information on the inter-working and connections of the internet that links together all the different bits and pieces of the World Wide Web.

Exploring Topics Summary

This unit allowed me to really understand the helpfulness of deep web researching. To finally notice the completely condensed and organized information that deep web resources have to offer has me kicking myself for not using it more in my life. I always resorted to the easy Google searches and occasional Wikipedia searches when i was completely stuck. No longer shall i resort to browsing the cheap unofficial websites that Google's crawlers (a new term i learned also) have discovered. I shall spend at least 75-80% of my time searching in the deep web encyclopedias that are completely focused to providing the exact information needed, rather than random quips and parcels of info that Google and Wikipedia offer.

Internet Research Questions

After reading the Internet articles on the GVRL and Wikipedia and gathering information through keywords and reading i composed three research questions

1. the Internet is Worldwide, how does this attribute help with media, communication, and recreational activities throughout the world?

2. The internet is full of Information, how does is this data and knowledge become so convenient for research?

3. Through the whole interconnected system of the internet how does the internet become orgaized with its endless amounts of links, documents, and pages?

Exploring Topics Wikipedia

Exploring the same topic of Internet, except with Wikipedia, i added to my list of keywords
Keywords
- Links
- Services
- Convenient
- Documents
- System
- Browser
- Pages
The article of Internet on Wikipedia was very extensive and gave a great overview of the major parts of the Internet. It also gave lots of info on the background pieces of the internet such as governance, Protocols, etc.

Exploring Articles GVRL

I chose the topic of Internet to explore. Using the Gale Virtual Reference Library I read through multiple articles and acquired an exstensive list of keywords that realted to Internet,
Keywords
- Worldwide
- Network
- Computer
- Virtual
- Navigating
- Connection
- Data
- Software
- Interface
- Information
- Media
- Research
- Communication

Plagiarism

Safe Practices: An Exercise

1. Correct and requires no citation as it is a personal experience.

2. If the information is taken from a source a citation would be needed. If by chance this was taken from an online resource or book of some source a citation would defiantly be needed telling where the information is located in correlation to the bibliography and the location of the info gathered in the bibliography.

3. There is absolutely no citation of where the statistic came from. Also I would rewrite the citation by putting  "According to ______, "57%  of high school students think their teachers assign too much homework."(___)

4. This seems to be a good paraphrase as long as long as there are parentheses at the beginning and end of the paraphrase.

5.  Another great paraphrase of the passage to me this one looks fine the way it is and no improvements would be necessary.

6. This info has no citing as to where it would be located to in the bibliography or to the starting work.  A parentheses  at the end of the paraphrase with (King, para 5) i would believe would suffice to citing the source.

7. This info would not need to be cited as it is personal info.

8. I'm not sure if this would be needed to be cited as it seems common sense to me as I am American and know my rights. If this were to be sent to other countries or something along those lines and i was not sure if the receiver would know the bill of rights as i do.

By reading the resources on plagiarism from the Clark online library, I believe i have improved my skills of documenting resources and noticing plagiarism. I feel like the idea of COP: Collect, Organize, Punctuate is going to stick in my head as i cite sources from now on. The concept is very easy to grasp and understand and lays out a great guide map on where to start and end. If i were to practice using COP more (as i believe i will in this class), The use of citations in schooling and academics will be a piece of cake from here on out.

First Post

First post of the bloggiest of blogs. Seems like using blogger will be quite easy to use as it is very simple. Using Blogger as a workspace is i will be able to access my internet resources faster than having to write down addresses and then typing them back into my computer later. I am a member of Facebook and Twitter but i am very unactive on them as i am not too involved in social media yet.
